Use case: Primary packaging

Increasing efficiency and reducing costs by changing the procurement of the glass bottle product group

Initial situation

In a challenging constellation, the foreign subsidiary of a supplier purchased identical glass bottles to their German counterparts, but at a price that was only half the local price – and from the same manufacturer.

Objective

Our aim was to bring the price of the procurement to a competitive level that was equal to or even lower than that in Germany.

This was to be achieved either through price negotiations with the current supplier or by identifying and evaluating alternative suppliers with more cost-effective offers.

Implementation

  • A thorough analysis and review of the price difference was carried out in order to understand and address the underlying causes.
  • Intensive discussions were held with existing suppliers to identify the reasons for the significant price differences and to find solutions.
  • A total of 5 different alternative suppliers were presented who manufacture identical products.
  • Direct talks were initiated with the manufacturer in order to agree a direct supply agreement and avoid the expensive middlemen.
  • Several rounds of negotiations were conducted together with the pharmaceutical company in order to achieve the best conditions for procurement.

Result

  • As a result of the successful negotiations and the strategic switch to direct supply, our member was able to achieve considerable annual savings in the six-figure range.
